Avoid Erosion
Restore bare patches in your lawn as soon as possible to avoid erosion. Seed newly-exposed areas immediately and mulch heavily with certified weed-free straw to conserve soil moisture.

Buffer Strips Slow Runoff
If you live near a stream or other waterway, allow thick vegetation, called buffer strips, to grow along them to slow runoff and soak up pollutants.

Maintain and protect existing trees and shrubs. When adding to your garden or yard, plant new trees and shrubs. Trees and shrubs help prevent erosion and beautify the landscape. They also decrease summer air-conditioning requirements by shading houses.
